State of the art concerning Lossless Medical Image Coding

| The output of recently developed imaging devices is more often in a digital format and both storage space and transmission times of these images proot from data compression. However, for legal and functional reasons, loss of information should be avoided, introducing the need for lossless compression techniques. Recent evolutions in computing power have given rise to the birth of several new and more promising compression techniques. In this paper we present an experimental comparison of some recently developed lossless image coders and investigate their compression eeciency and their speed with respect to diierent types of medical images.phy, PET and echography. We give combined compression ratio versus speed results for the diierent compression methods and show how the compress-ibility depends on the type of imagery. We show that CALIC performs best with respect to compression ratio (2 to 4), while BTPC and LOCO-I are best as an overall tradeoo.
